Space is not a static structure, but a living system that absorbs, transmits, and transforms stimuli. Perception arises in the space between—in the exchange between inside and outside, presence and resonance.

This is Simono’s central idea for both the concept of um | raum and her installation.

Based on her last project, the Organ of Voices, she develops a site-specific minimalist installation of sounds, voices, and musical elements. The instruments used are flute, bass, and membranophones—a generic term for drums and skin-covered instruments.

The historic walls of the estate bear traces of work, movement, and voice. Sounds that spread through the space touch these surfaces like breath. They are reflected, absorbed, refracted, just like the sounds of the surrounding district and the city.

The space responds. This interplay creates an acoustic wave, analogous to a skin that envelops the place and makes it audible. Sound functions here as a medium that activates the spatial qualities and reveals hidden layers: space as a membrane and resonance chamber.

Musicians: Alexis Baskind (double bass), Christiane Ditz (flute), Simono (taiko)

Simono initiated the project around | space and developed it in cooperation with the Britz Cultural Foundation. Eight artists were invited to install and present their site-specific light and sound works in the rooms on the grounds of the Britz estate. An analog film program will also be shown.

Drawing on her Super 8 installations “Rotation zur See” from 1998, Simono will install Bridge Markland’s dance vignettes as a window triptych in the foyer.
